The real scenario

Your UPI payment to a shop failed, but the money was deducted from your bank account. You panic and immediately Google "Customer care number for [App Name]." You tap on the very first result, which shows a 10-digit mobile number.

You call it. The person answers professionally, saying "Welcome to Official Support." They ask for your transaction ID, then tell you they need to verify your account to process the refund. They ask you to open your app and enter your 4-digit UPI PIN to "receive the reversed amount." You enter it, and another ₹5,000 is instantly deducted.

How does this work?

This is a classic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) scam. Scammers create fake websites, free blogs, and even manipulate Google Business listings to include their personal phone numbers. They keyword-stuff these pages so that when panicked users search for "customer care," the scammer's number shows up before the real company's website.

When you call, they impersonate customer care executives perfectly. They might even play hold music or transfer you to a "senior executive." Because you called them, your guard is down. Once they have your trust, they use technical jargon to trick you into giving up your UPI PIN, OTPs, or downloading remote-access apps like AnyDesk.

📞

Customer Care will NEVER ask for your UPI PIN.

Your PIN is only used for sending money, never for receiving a refund.

🚩 Red flags to watch for

🚩
The "Customer Care" number is a standard 10-digit mobile number (e.g., starting with 9, 8, or 7) instead of a 1800 toll-free number.
🚩
You found the number on a blog (blogspot, wordpress), a Twitter reply, or a Facebook comment, rather than the company's official `.com` or `.in` website.
🚩
The executive asks you to download "Quick Support," "AnyDesk," or "TeamViewer" to help fix your phone. (These apps give them full control of your screen).
🚩
They send you an SMS with a link and tell you to "forward this message to verify your SIM card."

✅ How to stay safe

✅
Use the App: Only seek support through the official "Help" or "Support" section built directly inside your UPI or banking app. Never Google for customer care numbers.
✅
Wait 48 Hours: If a transaction fails but money is deducted, the banking system usually auto-refunds it within 24 to 48 hours. Don't panic.
✅
Guard your PIN: Treat your UPI PIN like the key to your physical safe. You never hand it to anyone, no matter who they claim to be.
