The success screen is real. Your money never arrived.
The real scenario
Rajan runs a kirana store near a busy bus stop in Pune. During the evening rush, a young man picks up groceries worth ₹650. He scans Rajan's QR code, then holds up his phone showing a green "Payment Successful — ₹650 to Sharma Kirana" screen. Rajan is managing four customers at once. He nods and lets the man leave. An hour later, when Rajan checks his PhonePe balance, there is no ₹650 credit. The screen the man showed him was a screenshot saved on his phone — a transaction from a previous payment that he had carefully re-cropped and edited to show today's amount.
How do they pull it off?
This scam requires zero technical skill. Screenshot editing apps — freely available on every app store — allow anyone to change the amount, date, merchant name, and transaction ID on a payment success screen in under two minutes. The scammer either edits a real previous transaction or uses one of several publicly shared "template" screenshots that circulate on Telegram groups.
The attack relies on one thing: the shopkeeper trusting the screen instead of their own UPI inbox. In a busy shop with a queue of customers, the 30 seconds it takes to check your own UPI app feels like too long. Scammers know this and deliberately target peak hours.
This scam is most common in kirana stores, vegetable markets, street food stalls, and small clothing shops — anywhere the owner is serving multiple customers simultaneously and a UPI success screen is considered proof enough.
🚩 Red flags to watch for
🚩
The customer shows you the screenshot instead of keeping their phone in your line of sight while the transaction completes naturally.
🚩
You have not received an SMS or in-app notification on your own UPI app confirming the credit.
🚩
The customer seems impatient or tries to rush you — "It's done, check later, there are people behind me."
🚩
The transaction ID or timestamp on the screenshot looks oddly formatted or the merchant name is slightly misspelled.
✅ How to stay safe
✅
Check your own app: Never accept a screenshot as proof. Open your own PhonePe, GPay, or Paytm and verify the incoming credit before handing over goods. Takes 10 seconds.
✅
Enable sound alerts: Turn on loud UPI credit notifications in your app settings. When real money arrives, your phone makes a sound — no sound means no payment.
✅
Stick a notice: Put a small laminated card near your QR code that reads: "Screenshot not accepted. Please wait for my confirmation." Most honest customers will understand.
✅
Use a UPI billing device: Point-of-sale UPI devices (available from banks for free or minimal cost) display the credit amount on their own screen the moment payment arrives, removing all doubt.
