Why the first hour is critical

When you are scammed on UPI, the money does not vanish immediately. It moves to a "mule account" — an account controlled by the scammer, often someone hired to receive and forward funds. If you report fast enough, banks can place a technical hold on that account before the money is withdrawn or forwarded further. Once it moves again, recovery becomes nearly impossible.

What to collect before you report

📋
Transaction ID (UTR number) — visible in your UPI app transaction history and the debit SMS from your bank.
📋
Scammer's VPA / UPI ID — the address you sent money to (e.g. scammer@okhdfc). Screenshot it from the transaction details.
📋
Scammer's phone number — if they called you, save the number before they block you. It is evidence.
📋
Screenshots of all conversations — WhatsApp chats, SMS, any messages. Do not delete anything.
📋
Exact time and date — from your bank SMS. This helps the bank locate the transaction quickly in their system.

🚩 Common mistakes that hurt recovery

🚩
Waiting more than 24 hours before reporting. Most recovered funds come from reports made within the first 2–3 hours.
🚩
Deleting chats or call logs "to move on." These are evidence. Keep everything until the case closes.
🚩
Calling a "recovery agent" who promises to get your money back for a fee. This is a second scam targeting people who were already defrauded.
🚩
Only filing with one channel. File everywhere — bank, 1930, cybercrime portal, UPI app. More records mean more pressure.
