The real scenario

Shreya, a college student in Hyderabad, saw a post from an Instagram account that looked exactly like the official Flipkart page — blue tick, the right logo, thousands of followers. The post said: "Diwali Mega Giveaway — 100 winners get ₹5,000 each. Tag a friend and DM us your UPI." She DMed them. They told her she was a winner and asked her to send ₹1 to "verify your UPI account is active." She paid. They then said the prize transfer needed a ₹49 "processing fee." She paid that too. Then ₹199 for "tax clearance." Before she realised what was happening, she had paid ₹849 and received nothing. The account had 47,000 followers — all bought.

How do fake giveaways work?

The social media giveaway scam is one of the fastest-growing UPI frauds in India. Scammers create Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube accounts that closely mimic genuine brand pages. They buy thousands of followers and likes cheaply, copy the real brand's logo, bio, and post style, and sometimes even purchase a blue tick through compromised Meta accounts. To a casual viewer, the page looks completely legitimate.

The "₹1 to verify" framing is psychologically clever. One rupee feels negligible — it's barely a cost. But handing over your UPI ID and proving you're willing to transact on instruction is exactly what the scammer needs. Once you've sent ₹1, they escalate: processing fee, GST clearance, bank transfer fee, each amount slightly larger than the last. This is called a confidence trick, or "pig butchering" in fraud terminology — each small payment builds your commitment to the imaginary prize.

In more sophisticated variants, the scammer sends you a Collect Request (not a send prompt) for a "₹1 verification." If you approve it without reading, you may actually be approving a much larger amount — the UPI confirmation screen shows the full amount but scammers hope victims approve quickly on mobile without reading carefully.

🚩 Red flags to watch for

🚩
Any prize, giveaway, or cashback that requires you to first send any amount of money — ₹1, ₹10, or ₹99 — before receiving your prize. Real giveaways never ask you to pay first.
🚩
The brand account contacts you via DM — real brands run giveaways publicly on their verified page, not through private messages.
🚩
The account has a blue tick but the username contains extra dots, underscores, or words like ".official", ".india", ".support" that the real brand does not use.
🚩
A collect request arrives immediately after you share your UPI ID — always read the full amount before approving any collect request.

✅ How to stay safe

✅
Verify the account: Go to the official brand's actual website and look for their verified social media links. Do not assume a blue tick equals legitimacy — Meta's verification system has been compromised repeatedly.
✅
Never share your UPI ID in DMs: Your UPI ID by itself is not dangerous to share, but sharing it with scammers opens you to collect requests and impersonation attacks. Keep it to yourself.
✅
Read collect requests carefully: Before approving any UPI collect request, read the full amount and the requester's VPA. If you did not initiate a transaction, decline it. A ₹1 approval button sometimes hides a ₹10,000 transaction.
✅
Report fake pages: Use the "Report" button on Instagram or Facebook immediately when you spot a fake brand account. This helps protect others and gets the account removed faster.
