The Fake Loan Release Scam
📖 5 min read
🛡 SatarkScan Awareness
The loan that was never going to arrive
India has millions of people who need urgent credit but cannot easily access formal banking. Scammers target this exact vulnerability. They advertise instant loans on social media, Google, and WhatsApp with zero paperwork and same-day approval. The only requirement? A small "processing fee" paid upfront.
Once the fee is paid, the scammer either disappears or finds a reason to demand more money. The loan never comes. The fees are gone.
Vikram from Bengaluru needed ₹1.5 lakh urgently for a family medical emergency. He found a "QuickLoan" ad on Instagram. He was approved within 20 minutes. Then came the fees — processing fee, insurance fee, GST deposit, account verification. Each time he paid, another fee appeared. He lost ₹18,000 before realising there was never any loan.
The fee ladder — how they drain you slowly
Sophisticated loan scammers don't ask for a large amount upfront. They use a "fee ladder" — small, escalating charges that feel manageable:
1Processing fee₹1,999
2Insurance premium deposit₹3,499
3GST compliance charge₹2,100
4Account verification fee₹4,999
5Loan released → scammer vanishes₹0 received
🏦
No legitimate lender in India asks for fees before releasing a loan.
RBI regulations prohibit upfront fee collection before loan disbursement.
How SatarkScan helps
Every step of this scam involves a QR code or UPI payment link. The VPAs used often contain words like loan, release, finance, or processing. The amounts are typically pre-filled and often just below ₹5,000 to avoid round-number detection. SatarkScan will flag the pre-filled amount, any suspicious keywords, and threshold-dodging patterns like ₹4,999 or ₹2,499.
Red flags
🚩Any loan that requires upfront payment before funds are released.
🚩Approval within minutes with no credit check, no documents, no income verification.
🚩The "lender" contacts you first — via WhatsApp, Instagram, or SMS.
🚩Pressure to pay immediately or the loan offer expires.
🚩The company has no RBI registration number or a fake one.
What to do instead
✅Verify any lender on the RBI website at rbi.org.in — check the registered NBFC list before paying anything.
✅Approach your own bank first — they have your transaction history and can offer genuine credit.
✅Scan any loan-related QR code with SatarkScan before making any payment.
✅Report fake lenders to the RBI's sachet portal at sachet.rbi.org.in.
